Brighton v Crystal Palace Betting Preview 29/02/2020

Of all the derbies in English football it’s fair to say that the A23 derby is one of the least obvious. Brighton and Crystal Palace are around 40 miles apart as the crow flies and both have traditionally had rivalries with teams in their local area but there is no doubting the strength of ill feeling between the two clubs.

Recent years have seen the A23 derby taken into the Premier League and Saturday afternoon’s edition is arguably the most important since both clubs have been in the top flight.

Neither side has yet shaken off the threat of relegation back into the Championship this season. Brighton are in most danger of the drop but Palace fans are far from entirely convinced that their team is playing well enough currently to stave off the threat of relegation.

A win for either side at the Amex Stadium on Saturday would be huge both for morale and in the context of their seasons but where does the betting value lie?

Late Drama Could be the Order of Day

It’s often tough, even for top level Premier League players, to get going for an early kick-off. Players have to get up early, force down a big meal for breakfast and try to peak for 12:30, all of which can be a struggle.

There is an opportunity for either Brighton and Crystal Palace to catch their opponent off guard with a fast start but we expect this match to come to the boil fairly slowly.

The importance of the match won’t be lost on either manager. Of the two, Roy Hodgson is considerably better versed in this rivalry and vastly more experienced than his counterpart in the opposite dugout, Graham Potter.

Hodgson continues to get a tune out of his Crystal Palace side despite working on a tight budget by Premier League standards but many Eagles fans are starting to wonder whether it’s time the marched to the beat of a different drum.

Pragmatic as the Hodgson approach is, it’s hardly the most exciting style of football, especially when the club’s aim is simply to avoid relegation every season. That pragmatism is likely to see Crystal Palace set out to frustrate Brighton’s attacking intent but we think the home team will have enough to earn the win.

Brighton have shown they are capable of some very good football this season whilst the way they battled for a draw away to Sheffield United last weekend showed they have the stomach for the fight.

If the Seagulls do take all three points it may well be via a late winner which leads us to a couple of Premier League betting tips.

The first is the Draw/Brighton selection in BetVictor’s half-time/full time market at 22/5. The second is on the last goal of the game coming after between 76 minutes to full time at tempting odds of 11/8 with Betway.

Murray Can Haunt His Former Employers

Every Brighton player would love to score the winner in this vital derby match but it would arguably mean most to Glenn Murray. The 36-year-old has recently worked his way back into first team reckoning thanks to some strong performances and a couple of goals.

Crystal Palace fans know all about his ability to sniff out goals as he was a fan favourite during his time at the club but Murray will have no problem scoring against the Eagles on Saturday so is a tempting option in the betting to score the game’s last goal at 5/1 with 888Sport.
