Burnley v Tottenham Hotspur Betting Preview 07/03/2020

Tottenham’s FA Cup fifth round tie against Norwich got off to a very good start. Spurs went into the break with a 1-0 lead and were the heavy odds on favourites with the bookies to book their place in the quarter-finals.

However, it went drastically downhill from there.

A nervy looking Tottenham managed to throw away their lead against the Premier League’s bottom team and were eventually knocked out on a penalty shoot-out.

Tim Krul’s decisive save wasn’t the end of the ignominy for Tottenham though as they were booed off the pitch by their fans and Eric Dier climbed into the stands to try and confront a fan.

As you would expect, Jose Mourinho came in for some serious criticism for the latest in a line of disappointing performances over the last couple of months. He will hope to revive Spurs’ fortunes by making some signings over the summer transfer window but in the immediate term there’s the small matter of a trip to Burnley to worry about.

Burnley Can Keep European Hopes Alive

The job for Mourinho when he was handed the reins at Tottenham was to reignite the team’s push for the Champions League. They are five points short of the top four going into the weekend though and whilst fifth may be enough for them due to Manchester City’s UEFA ban, Burnley take overtake Spurs on Saturday evening.

Having flirted with the relegation scrap, Burnley’s climb up the Premier League table is very impressive. Sean Dyche always told his players and the club’s fans that they should retain trust in the process which has yielded such great results in recent seasons and, once again, he has been proven right.

Thanks to a run of six Premier League games without defeat, Burnley are right in the hunt to earn a place in Europe. Following the disappointment of their last attempt to qualify for the Europa League, the Clarets will be even more motivated to get back into continental competition and we think they’ll be able to add three points to their tally on Saturday.

Tottenham very much have the look of a team who just want this season to be over. Mourinho does have the excuse of missing his best two forwards in Harry Kane and Son Heung-min but it’s very obviously not working for him at Spurs just yet so Burnley look overpriced at 17/10 with Coral.

Goals Expected at Turf Moor

If you watched last week’s Match Of The Day all the way to the end to see the highlights of Burnley’s trip to Newcastle last weekend, you could be forgiven for not taking the time to watch Burnley vs Tottenham. However, we’re of the opinion that there is betting value to be had in backing goals in Saturday’s late game.

On the face of it, these are two teams with defensive minded managers in charge. Dyche and Mourinho will be keen to ensure their team doesn’t lose this one early on by being too expansive in the first half but they’ll also see this as a very good opportunity to earn three points.

With Tottenham looking uncharacteristically weak in defence and Burnley capable of scoring plenty of goals at home, a bet on over 2.5 goals is tempting at odds of 6/5 with Betfair.

Another way of capitalising on a game which may well burst to life late on is by betting on the second half having more goals than the first at best odds of 6/5 with Paddy Power.
