Glorious Goodwood Horse Racing Betting Preview 2019

Glorious Goodwood (officially called the Qatar Goodwood Festival) is a top class flat racing meeting held every year in mid-summer. Many of the very best horses, jockeys and trainers will make their way to the West Sussex course for the five-day meeting.

Racing fans are always promised excellent action at Glorious Goodwood whilst punters have a wealth of options in their quests to beat the bookies. To that end, we’ve gone through the biggest race from each day and picked out the best bets from each in our Glorious Goodwood betting tips.

Goodwood Cup

It takes a genuinely top class horse to go into one of the feature races at Glorious Goodwood as the odds-on favourite. That is a very accurate description of Stradivarius who is a best price of 4/5 with bet365 to win the Goodwood Cup.

There are no questions about Stradivarius’ ability to win this 2-mile race. He is, after all, the defending champion. The Goodwood Cup was just one of the big races he won last year en route to winning the Stayers’ Million, and he’s on track to delight his connections again by repeating the trick.

His wins in the Yorkshire Cup and Ascot Gold Cup did not come easily. Rather than suggesting that he is past his best, those performances proved that Stradivarius’ stomach for the fight is as big as ever, so he is justifiably strong at the head of the Goodwood Cup market.

Sussex Stakes

The 2019 renewal of the Sussex Stakes is not the strongest that this Group 1 race has ever seen, but we do have a fascinating battle between Too Darn Hot and Circus Maximus in prospect.

It was the latter who came out on top when the two met at the St James’s Palace Stakes. Circus Maximus had to be supplemented for that race and went off at 10/1 so did incredibly well to win.

In stark contrast, Too Darn Hot’s performance was poor enough for some to suggest that he hadn’t come on from an impressive juvenile season. Those critics were much quieter when he claimed a first Group 1 win as a three-year-old in Deauville but can you make a case for as the 5/4 favourite? We’re not so sure and recommend backing Circus Maximus at 5/2 with Boylesports

Nassau Stakes

The Nassau Stakes is a chance for the classiest three-year-old fillies around to give their elders a run for their money at the top level. Members of the Classic generation have had the better of things in this Group 1, 1m2f contest, and they dominate the top of the betting for this year’s renewal.

The amount of support that the favourite, Hermosa, is getting is understandable. The best price you’ll find on the English and Irish 1000 Guineas winner is the 9/4 that Ladbrokes are quoting. She does have the quality required but this is a tough race to win for fillies who have been kept over a mile which opens the door to Mehdaayih.

She heads to the race on the back of a good Group 2 win in the Prix de Malleret and would have done better in the Epsom Oaks were it not for hitting traffic in running. There are no concerns about Mehdaayih’s ability to get the trip, so she has to be considered good value at 4/1 with Coral.

King George Stakes

The 5 furlong King George Stakes is all about one horse – Battaash. Charlie Hills could hardly be happier with his five-year-old who is attempting to complete the hat-trick in this race. Yes, he failed to win at Royal Ascot but there was absolutely no shame in being beaten by Blue Point in the King’s Stand Stakes.

Those getting their first look at Battaash are often surprised at how small he is for a sprinter. His size hasn’t held him back from winning some massive races in his career and Hills believes it helps him to deal with the undulations at Goodwood better than the competition, so he is a favourite that’s well worth backing at 1/3 with Ladbrokes.

If you’re looking for a bigger potential yield from this one, consider backing Sergei Prokofiev each way at 14/1 with Paddy Power. He has the talent but has been let down by his lack of experience so far so is a dangerous option.

Stewards’ Cup

This is the big betting heat of Glorious Goodwood. Many punters have had positions in the ante post markets for the Stewards’ Cup for weeks now but picking the winner of a race that had more than 100 entries for just 28 places is obviously a big ask.

There are a few trends to help you whittle down the options though. You should only consider horses who have ample experience in this sort of big field sprint handicap, who head into the race on the back of a first or second place finish last time out and have less than 9st 7lb to carry.

Gulliver (20/1 with Betway) is one of those who looks fairly well treated by the handicapper after winning off a similar mark last time out. This is his debut at Goodwood which raises a question mark but if the going is on the firm side he could have a real chance.

Flavius Titus’ previous appearance at Goodwood didn’t go to plan last season, but he’s earned some invaluable experience over the last 12 months. He has the pace to be a real threat over 6 furlongs and has bags of sprint handicap experience so back him to win at 14/1 with Black Type.
