Liverpool v Arsenal Premier League Betting Preview 24/08/2019

Unai Emery jokingly told the media that he would prefer not to play Liverpool at all this season. The Arsenal manager could only watch on in horror as his team were thrashed 5-1 on their most recent trip to Anfield last season, and he must be fearful of something similar in Saturday’s late match.

The Arsenal fans making the trip to Merseyside won’t be quite as pessimistic as you might think. They were very happy with the signings their team made in the summer and are just as happy with the Gunners’ start to the season.

Arsenal secured a rare away win against Newcastle in their first match before a beating Burnley 2-1 at the Emirates. A match against the reigning European champions is a completely different test though and Arsenal’s perfect start is likely to come to an end at Anfield.

Liverpool Just Too Good at the Moment

Liverpool are the only side other than Arsenal with six points to show from their first two Premier League matches. Jurgen Klopp’s men have also picked up the Super Cup since their season began, and it was the way that his team overcame the physical exertion of their trip to Istanbul that most pleased the Liverpool manager.

Klopp called last weekend’s match against Southampton ‘the biggest banana skin in history’ but wouldn’t allow his players to use their efforts in the Super Cup as an excuse. Liverpool had to ride their luck a little after a horrible mistake from goalkeeper Adrian, but they came away from Hampshire with the three points which is all that matters.

Arsenal are a much better side than Southampton, but we expect Liverpool to secure another three points. Emery’s men are still a work in progress compared to their hosts on Saturday and their defensive frailties could well be exposed once again at Anfield.

Therefore, rather than simply backing Liverpool to win, combine it with a bet on over 2.5 goals being scored at 20/21 with Boylesports.

If you think that Arsenal will have something to say in the match – and they quite easily could with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Alexandre Lacazette and Nicolas Pepe ready to all start together – betting on both teams to score is the best option at 4/7 with Betfred.

Luiz to Try and Lead By Example

It was clear last season that Arsenal’s defence needed a lot of work. Unai Emery and his coaching staff worked hard on the training ground but ultimately Arsenal won’t get better at the back until they bring in better players.

With centre-backs going for silly money, the Arsenal board did a good job to sign David Luiz for just £8 million. The former Chelsea and PSG defender is an experienced, quality operator who has real leadership qualities.

Luiz is, however, prone to the odd mistake. The combination of his desire to be a leader and to get things wrong now and then could easily see him make a bad tackle or two against Liverpool’s incredibly fast, dangerous forward line. So, a bet on Luiz to be shown a yellow card has to be tempting at 5/2 with bet365.
