Newcastle’s first game of last season was a televised home match against Tottenham. There will be a certain sense of deja vu then on Sunday afternoon as another North London team make their way to St James’ Park for the Magpies’ first match of the new season.
Arsenal are the visitors on Sunday. The few thousand Gooners who travel up from London will do so unsure of what to expect. Arsenal ended last season with a horrible record away from home but made some exciting signings in the transfer window so nobody really knows what sort of season they’ll have.
Newcastle fans are rather more sure of what awaits their team. Unfortunately, they’re not expecting it to be an easy watch. The appointment of Steve Bruce as Rafael Benitez’s replacement did not go down well and many pundits are predicting a long, hard battle against relegation for the Magpies.
Arsenal Can End Their Away Day Blues
Arsenal’s horrible run of form away from the Emirates towards the back end of last season was a real problem for some fans. Unai Emery was pretty much exclusively coming in for praise from the Gunners’ fans but their weak performances on the road were reminiscent of some of the worst spells of Arsene Wenger’s final years.
It was clear to many that Arsenal needed to strengthen their defence over the summer. It remains to be seen whether the signings of Kieran Tierney and David Luiz have the desired impact or not.
If Arsenal give themselves a good platform to build on by being harder to beat, there is every chance their incredible array of attacking talent will fire them back into the Champions League. Certainly, the Gunners have enough firepower to beat Newcastle with Nicolas Pepe set to line up in a front three alongside Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang.
The Newcastle fans always turn out to St James’ Park ready to support their team but you get the feeling the atmosphere will turn quickly if things don’t start well on Sunday afternoon. Arsenal can make the most of the anxiety on Tyneside by starting their season with an away win at 5/6 with Unibet.
Lacazette Ready for a Big Season
Alexandre Lacazette should be approaching the peak of his career. The 28-year-old has the confidence of performing well at the top level of domestic, continental and international football and is very much used to life in London as he approaches his third season with Arsenal.
As we’ve seen, Lacazette is just one of the high class forwards available to Unai Emery. He is likely to play through the middle more than anybody else at the club in the coming season though. With Arsenal set to score a lot of goals, Lacazette could be worth a bet to be the Premier League’s top goalscorer at 25/1 with Betfred.
Can Joelinton Become a Geordie Hero?
Fans of every club love a goalscorer who gets the job done regularly but Newcastle fans have had some particularly strong bonds with their centre-forwards over the years. Of course, nobody will ever quite measure up to Alan Shearer who sets the standard but hopes are high that Joelinton could be something special.
The Brazilian was signed for a deal that is reported to be worth £40 million so there’s a fair share of pressure on his shoulders. He’s also got to keep the returning Andy Carroll out of the team but we think Joelinton has what it takes to be Newcastle’s main man.
In fact, Joelinton could hit the ground running by scoring against a potentially suspect Arsenal defence at 10/3 with Black Type.
