Open Championship Golf Betting Preview

After 68 years of touring some of the very best links golf courses in England and Scotland, the Open Championship finally returns to Northern Ireland this week.

The 2019 edition of this most famous of golf tournaments is taking place at a rejuvenated Royal Portrush. Set on the North Atlantic coast, the Dunluce Course has always been regarded as one of the finest links layouts in the world and was only improved in recent years with some considerable renovation work to the original Harry Colt design.

What we’re left with is a par-71 layout that can stretch to over 7,300 yards. That’s enough scope for some punishingly long holes (especially when the wind howls) but it’s going to take more than power to score well at Portrush.

The standout element of the Dunluce Course is the greens. The winner this week will need to putt very well, control their approach shots into the greens and possess a rock solid short game to get out of the unavoidable trouble.

The players who got to Portrush early are all raving about the course, so we should be in line for a top class week of golf ahead.

Rahm to Thrill the Irish Fans Once Again

Jon Rahm did not have particularly high expectations of his first professional tournament in Ireland. Ahead of the 2017 Irish Open at Portstewart, Rahm admitted that he didn’t have a great deal of links golf experience and played down his chances of contending.

It didn’t take long for him to realise that he had all the skills required to play well at tough links venues.

The Spaniard won the tournament by a huge six shot margin for his first European Tour title. Three more European Tour wins have followed, including the most recent renewal of the Irish Open, so it’s fair to say that Rahm enjoys playing golf in Ireland.

Portrush will play much more difficult than Portstewart or Lahinch but Rahm is more than capable of rising to the challenge. He has the combination of power off the tee, touch around the greens and confidence with the putter to put the competition to the sword this week to claim his maiden major championship at generous odds of 16/1 with Betfred.

Incoming Form Usually Gives Some Great Pointers

Punters have several ways to potentially tackle the Open. You’d want to be backing players with proven links pedigree, who have the mental fortitude to cope when things get tough on the course and who arrive at Portrush on the back of some solid form.

The vast majority of recent Open winners had impressive long term form before getting their hands on the Claret Jug. That hasn’t quite been possible for Bernd Wiesberger due to a wrist injury that kept him out for some time but the Austrian has returned to action in brilliant form.

A second place finish at the Irish Open showed that Wiesberger really was back, and he went one better last week by winning the Scottish Open in a playoff. He’s feeling as good about his game right now as ever and is clearly adept at links golf so Wiesberger is worthy of each way support at 66/1 with bet365.

If Wiesberger can keep his current form up he’ll be right in the mix for a place on Europe’s 2020 Ryder Cup team. Make the cut, and he’ll almost certainly be playing against Matt Wallace who has used the disappointment of missing out on Le Golf National as further motivation to succeed at the very top level.

This is just Wallace’s second crack at the Open, but he has plenty of links form and could be a real danger at 50/1 with Sportingbet
