PDC World Matchplay Darts Betting Preview 20/07/2019-28/07/2019

Phil Taylor achieved an incredible amount during his darting career. He won pretty much everything there was to win but saved his very best for the biggest events of all.

Taylor was widely known as the 16-time champion of the world, but he had an equally impressive record in the World Matchplay. For many darts players and fans, the Matchplay is the only tournament that compares with the World Championship.

Taylor’s 16 wins at the Empress Ballroom in Blackpool’s Winter Gardens will live long in the history books, so it is fitting that the trophy awarded to the tournament winner was renamed in his honour.

With the very best darts players in the world in attendance and sold out crowds throughout the eight days of play, this year’s battle for the Phil Taylor Trophy is set to be as fierce as ever in the punishing heat of the Empress Ballroom stage.

Cross Can Grab Major Number Two

As is always the case ahead of a big PDC tournament, Michael van Gerwen is the bookies’ favourite for the 2019 World Matchplay. The Dutchman is the number one player in the world and has beaten every player in the field multiple times.

Part of the challenge of playing van Gerwen is overcoming the sense of inevitability that he will win which sets in even before a match begins. It’s a little different in Blackpool though. Van Gerwen has been unable to regularly find his best game at the Winter Gardens and may be worth avoiding at a general price of 11/8.

Van Gerwen’s strength at the head of the market means some very good value about the other leading contenders including the 8/1 that Coral are quoting on Rob Cross.

Some darts fans began to question whether Cross would go down as a one-hit wonder after he struggled to live up to the expectations set by his 2018 World Championship win. Cross found life tough at the top and has had to work hard to rediscover his best darts.

Thankfully for Cross and his fans, he found his mojo during this year’s Premier League campaign. He now looks ready to really fulfil his potential by winning multiple PDC majors.

Cross is playing better now than in the lead-up to any of his World Matchplay appearances and can smash his previous best finish of the last 16 by winning this prestigious tournament.

Wade and Price to Prove Difficult for Different Reasons

Few players find the Empress Garden brings out the best in them quite like James Wade. Phil Taylor is the only man to make it to more World Matchplay finals than the ‘Machine’ and he’ll be feeling especially confident about his chances of another final this year.

Wade has fought back from some tough times both on and off the oche over recent years. It’s great for his loyal following to see the Englishman back to something approaching his best, and he is a real danger to the field this week at best betting odds of 25/1 with Paddy Power.

Another player to consider for a title at the Matchplay title is Gerwyn Price. He is a real Marmite figure in the game thanks to an ultra-competitive streak that sometimes sees him overstep the line of acceptable behaviour.

Price understands that being drawn into petty disputes with his fellow pros is ultimately not beneficial and that he must better harness his competitive spirit to add to his sole major title. The straight knockout format of the Matchplay and the importance of momentum in individual matches should suit Price’s style so consider supporting him at 20/1 with Betfair.
