Sheffield United v Arsenal Betting Preview 21/10/2019

The perceived wisdom about teams playing in their first Premier League season since winning promotion is that home form is key. You hear a lot of managers saying how important it is to make the most of the matches in front of their own fans.

Chris Wilder has always done things his own way. He has made a point of the fact that his Sheffield United team have actually secured more points on the road than at home this season.

An ability to dig out results on away from home will stand Sheffield United in good stead as they look to cement their place in the top flight. In the short term though it’s all about Bramall Lane and the visit of Arsenal on Monday night.

Blades Can Secure Another Big Win

Bramall Lane has rarely been an easy place for opposition teams to visit. Arsenal have certainly had some very tough away matches against Sheffield United over the years. The two teams haven’t often been in the same division but some classic ties helped set the tone for a fairly intense rivalry.

Arsenal had a significantly better side than Sheffield United during their meetings over the last 20 years, but that didn’t always result in a win for the Gunners. The Blades have always upped their game for matches against Arsenal, but things really got heated after the infamous meeting at Highbury when Arsenal scored a goal that was so controversial the match ended up being replayed.

The matches since have been characterised as a technical, somewhat fancy-dan team against a less technically gifted side who bend the rules on occasion to secure a result. Neither stereotype is quite accurate but there is no doubt that Sheffield United will have to focus on stopping Arsenal from playing first and foremost on Monday night.

That may not be as difficult as the bookies’ odds suggest. Arsenal, the odds on favourites with the bookies, have been their own worst enemy away from home over the last year or so. Unai Emery has done little to rid the team of their ability to fall apart away from home.

Providing Chris Wilder and his coaching team come up with a way of stopping Arsenal’s world-class forwards and from having too much of an influence on the match, they can pull off a surprise result to surpass their wins over Everton and Crystal Palace and their near-miss over Liverpool.

It’s tempting to play it a little safe and back Sheffield United in the double chance market, but if they do stop Arsenal from causing them too many problems, the Blades have the quality to win the match and the odds of 3/1 that Blacktype are quoting are just too good to ignore.

Expect Plenty of Goal Mouth Action

You can forgive this current crop of Arsenal players from not understanding the rather strange rivalry between these two teams. They’ll be told to expect a red-hot atmosphere but there’s a good chance the intensity of the fans at Bramall Lane will catch them out.

With Arsenal likely having to grow into the occasion, a bet on the home side scoring the game’s first goal looks well priced at 7/5 with SportNation.

Arsenal are too good a side not to get on the ball and create chances at some stage during the match. Both teams are going to have good spells of pressure which suggests that a bet on over 11.5 corners will pay out nicely at 7/5 with Betfair.
