Southampton v Watford Betting Preview 30/11/2019

Is it too early to be talking about relegation six-pointers? Not if you’re a fan of Southampton or Watford.

After starts to the season which would be best described as horrendous, Southampton and Watford are the Premier League’s bottom two teams and find themselves staring a long battle against the drop straight in the face.

Both had much loftier ambitions before the season but must now play the hand they’ve been dealt. Pulling away from trouble is the only priority at the moment and a win against a relegation rival would be a fantastic result for whichever team wins at St Mary’s on Saturday evening.

Watford to Turn the St Mary’s Crowd

Ralph Hasenhuttl had an instant impact on Southampton after taking over from Mark Hughes. It was clear that the team needed a major shake-up after things went stale under Hughes and the charismatic Austrian was the perfect character to instil some much-needed belief into the Saints.

Hasenhuttl also brought with him a much more dynamic style of football, all about pressing and high energy. The Southampton fans fell for their new manager straight away but the early results soon faded and Saints left it late to secure their Premier League survival.

In his defence, Hasenhuttl has had to deal with a lot of upheaval behind the scenes at Southampton. It’s not always been the easiest place to work but he does have responsibility for getting the best out of the players on the pitch and that has very obviously not happened so far.

Whilst performances have improved since their humiliating 9-0 defeat to Leicester, Southampton remain winless in eight Premier League matches. If that run is extended via defeat to Watford on Saturday, Hasenhuttl may well find himself out of a job come Monday morning.

Watford have already made a change in manager. They say you should never go back and the move to reappoint Quique Sanchez Flores was always going to be a risk. So far, his pragmatic style of management hasn’t lifted either the mood or results at Watford and some fans have already called for the man appointed in September to be given the sack.

Sanchez Flores is still working hard on the training ground to give Watford a platform from which to build and will surely be given more time. The Hornets have at least lost just two of their last six matches but by the same token they’ve picked up just one win.

That win came on the road against another team threatened by relegation – Norwich. Watford will head to St Mary’s with much the same game plan they used that day, namely, starting with plenty of tempo to score the early goal that turns the home crowd against their team and then sitting back to frustrate the hosts.

Whilst backing Watford clearly comes with an element of risk, we think they will be able to earn a huge win over Southampton and that the away side represent good betting value at 5/2 with William Hill.

Expect Tension, Not Goals

Everybody inside St Mary’s will understand the importance of this match. Nervous tension will be very high amongst both sets of players and management. That is sure to have an impact on the quality of the game and we’re already talking about a match between the worst two teams in the division so far.

Both teams have really struggled for goals which should negate the fact that they’re both inside the worst three performing defences. We are not expecting an end-to-end classic and neither should you. Make sure to bet on under 2.5 goals at 17/20 with Paddy Power.

Another option is backing Watford to win by the narrowest of margins and taking the 11/1 that bet365 are quoting on the away side winning 1-0.
