The Epsom Derby Betting Preview – 01/06/2019

The Epsom Derby is among the most prestigious and highly anticipated races of the entire horse racing calendar. Run at Epsom Downs, the Derby is the fourth and arguably most important of the five English Classics.

The reasons for the prestige of the Derby are numerous. It’s an incredibly historic race which has been won by some of the finest thoroughbreds of all time since 1780, it’s also incredibly lucrative with over £900,000 going to winning connections.

Perhaps the biggest reason for the Derby’s importance is its 1 mile 4 furlong trip. The best flat racing horses tend to do most of their racing at a mile and a half and races at that distance don’t get any bigger, at least for three-year-olds. Winning the Derby marks a horse out as a top class performer and opens the door to more huge contests in the future whilst instantly increasing their future fee at stud.

Broome the Pick From the Top of the Betting

Winning the Derby requires a combination of both speed and stamina. It is, in many judges’ eyes, the perfect race to test the very best three-year-olds in training and the number of winners from the top portion of the betting market is therefore unsurprising.

However, after 10 straight renewals were won by horses in the top three of the betting, the Derby was turned on its head in the last two years. First, Wings Of Eagles became the longest odds winner in the Derby’s history at 40/1 and then Masar scored a surprise at 16/1. Those performances have opened punters’ eyes to the chances of those at longer prices but the money for the 2019 Derby has come for the three fighting it out for favouritism.

Sir Dragonet (5/2 with bet365), Broome (9/2 with Paddy Power) and Telecaster (5/1 with BetVictor) have all been well backed, and it would be no surprise if one of them claimed the big prize.

You can make a case for all three and the interest in Sir Dragonet and Telecaster is particularly strong after they were both supplemented for the Derby, but it’s Broome who makes the most appeal.

The Aidan O’Brien trained colt has a lot more experience than his rivals and whilst horses with more than five appearances don’t fare well according to the trends, Broome hasn’t exactly been worked too hard this season.

After strengthening his Derby chances with a blistering win in the Ballysax Stakes, Broome returned to Leopardstown with another win in what was little more than a warm-up for the Derby. Nevertheless, getting into the habit of winning is no bad thing and Broome has shown ample speed and stamina to win the Derby just like his sire, Australia, did five years ago.

Line Of Duty Set for Major Improvement

Punters who believe that the nature of the Derby has changed in as much as long shots now have a genuine chance of springing a surprise are on the lookout for some tempting value further down the bookies’ markets.

In that regard it’s Line Of Duty who stands out at the best price of 33/1 with BetVictor. The Charlie Appleby trained colt has only made one appearance so far this season and that ended in a disappointing seventh of eight competitors in the Dante Stakes at York.

Appleby tried to play down that disappointment by claiming that the ground was too firm for a horse who made steady steps forward as a two-year-old. Although he wasn’t a prolific winner, Line Of Duty kept competing at a higher and higher level, culminating in his win in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf at Churchill Downs at the end of the season.

If he has wintered well and was just in need of a warm-up at York, Line Of Duty could prove to be a very shrewd each-way betting option.
