Watford v Tottenham Hotspur Betting Preview 18/01/2020

The Watford fans were hardly overcome with jubilation when Nigel Pearson was appointed the club’s new manager. He does have experience of guiding teams away from the bottom of the Premier League table but is hardly the most exciting name.

Pearson has wasted no time in winning the doubters over.

Watford look a completely different team since he took control. They are certainly considerably better organised and much more difficult to beat.

The Hornets climbed out of the relegation zone last weekend with their fourth win in five matches. Can they maintain their impressive run when Tottenham visit Vicarage Road early on Saturday afternoon?

Watford the Value Choice

Despite their current run of form, Watford are the underdogs with the bookmakers for Saturday’s match. Fair enough, they are nine places and eight points behind Tottenham but we see no reason why they can’t close that gap.

It’s not just that Watford are difficult to break down, that the return of captain Troy Deeney has given them more fight or that all the players seem to have taken Pearson’s instructions on board. There’s also Tottenham’s recent form which is little short of wretched.

Some of the criticism that came Jose Mourinho’s way in the aftermath of Spurs’ 1-0 loss to Liverpool was probably a little unfair. He is operating without some of his best players including Harry Kane so a safety-first approach against the runaway Premier League leaders made sense.

However, you get the feeling that Mourinho’s critics and a significant number of Tottenham fans are waiting for signs of negativity from the Spurs boss.

This is a team that reached the Champions League final playing some incredible football under Mauricio Pochettino. Whatever the injury situation, Spurs fans don’t want to see their team accept that they are such a long way behind Liverpool when they were competing with them so recently.

Given Mourinho’s approach and reputation, his appointment as Tottenham manager looks stranger by the week. In contrast to the Watford squad, you can’t say that the Spurs players look invigorated or even convinced by Mourinho’s methods.

The difference in motivation between these two could be more important than the difference in individual quality. Therefore, Watford look a cracking price for a home win at betting odds of 21/10 with Ladbrokes.

Deeney to Lead By Example Again

The loss of Harry Kane, potentially for the rest of the season, is a huge blow to Tottenham. He is their leading goalscorer and their leader on the pitch.

You only have to look at how much Watford struggled without their striker and captain, Troy Deeney, to see how much one player can impact a whole team.

Telling his teammates to concentrate immediately after celebrating scoring Watford’s second goal in the 3-0 win over Bournemouth was peak Deeney. He is a man who takes his role on and off the pitch very seriously and can set the tone against Tottenham both by ensuring his teammates give their all and by scoring at 21/10 with 888Sport.

Chances to be at a Premium

Mourinho will have done his homework on Watford. He’ll know to expect a serious challenge at Vicarage Road and will surely tell his players to ensure they don’t give the hosts any chances.

Whilst we’re not expecting quite as defensive a display as we saw from Tottenham against Liverpool, we don’t envisage this being an end-to-end thriller.

Watford won’t play into Spurs’ hands by being too open in the early stages either. To take advantage of this with your Premier League betting, take the 2/1 that Paddy Power are quoting on the 0-0 half-time score.
