Women’s World Cup Betting Preview 07/07/2019

For the second year in a row, an English World Cup adventure ended in heartbreak at the semi-final stage. Phil Neville said that he could not fault the effort of his players as they attempted to reach the Women’s World Cup final for the first time and the Lionesses did come close to knocking out the pre-tournament favourites, the USA.

However, England saw their dreams shattered thanks to a missed penalty, an incredibly tight VAR decision to rule out a goal and the general high quality of the American play.

Neville’s opposite number, Jill Ellis, was also kind about England in the wake of the semi-final, but she reserved the bulk of her praise for her own players. The USA played some excellent football at times which they combined with a real ruthless will to win.

That’s the approach the USWNT will take into Sunday’s final against the Netherlands, but will they be able to get their hands on the World Cup trophy for a fourth time?

USA the Worthy Favourites

The USA have not made it to the World Cup final without ruffling a few feathers. The criticism began in their very first game for the veracity of their celebrations during an incredibly mismatched match against Thailand which ended 13-0.

Suggestions of arrogance and bending the rules have followed USA Women throughout the World Cup but if anything those dissenting voices have only made them stronger.

Whilst Ellis has concentrated on matters on the field, various players have spoken out to the media in defence of their actions. The USA certainly had no problem putting in a very strong tackle or two against England and Alex Morgan’s celebration after scoring the winner against England made numerous headlines.

In truth, much of the criticism that’s come the USA’s way has been unwarranted. They’ve been the best team at the tournament and their will to push the boundaries to win is the mark of a very strong unit.

Netherlands Could Make Their Mark Even as They Fall Short

The online bookmakers are clear that the USA will be too strong for the Netherlands. The Dutch players were not expecting to make it this far in the tournament, and although they’ll do all they can to make the most of this opportunity, they are some way short of the USWNT.

The biggest price available on the USA is the 4/9 that Ladbrokes are quoting. As fair as that price may be, it doesn’t exactly set the pulse racing for a match of this magnitude.

A better bet could be backing the USA to win and both teams to score at 5/2 with Betfair. Ellis’ team may have justified their favouritism so far, but they’ve conceded in every knockout match to date whilst the Netherlands have scored in every single World Cup match.

If you’re looking for a bigger yield from a match in which both teams have an impact, consider the USA 3-1 correct score at 12/1 with bet365. The favourites have more than enough pace and quality in attacking positions to exploit the Dutch defence if they pour forward in search of a late goal so those odds do look tempting.

Finally, consider a bet on Megan Rapinoe to score the game’s last goal at 5/1 with Bethard. Rapinoe was the USA’s match winner in the quarter-final against France but was surprisingly dropped for the England match.

Rapinoe is not the sort to bow out quietly, and she may just have the final word at what has been an excellent edition of the Women’s World Cup.
