Barcelona v Liverpool Champions League Betting Preview 01/05/2019

The passing of April into May is always an exciting time in the European footballing calendar. May is the month in which silverware is traditionally won, and we have a huge match in terms of the destination of the Champions League on the very first day of the month.

The online bookies all have Barcelona and Liverpool as number one and two in their Champions League outright winner market. The winner of Wednesday night’s match will firm up at the head of the market but who will come out on top in the Camp Nou?

Barcelona to Prove Too Strong at Home

It’s been a time of celebration for Barcelona recently. The loyal Cules have shown their appreciation for Ernesto Valverde’s team in recent weeks as they’ve moved to wrap up the Liga title, and they’ll be in great voice once again for the visit of Liverpool.

Those travelling from Merseyside will also make a huge din from the away end. Some of them will have made the same trip in 2007 when rumours of a fight between John Arne Riise and Craig Bellamy were put to bed as both men scored in a 2-1 win at the Camp Nou.

Jurgen Klopp takes a much stronger Liverpool team to Catalunya this week but the odds suggest that they won’t secure such a positive result. Barcelona are as short as 8/11 in some places which may look a little short given the quality available to Klopp but is probably a fair reading of the game.

Barcelona were far too good for Manchester United in the last round and although Liverpool will surely put up more of a fight, we think Valverde’s men are good enough for a narrow win. So, take the odds of 13/5 that Paddy Power are quoting on Barcelona winning by one goal.

Liverpool’s Attacking Threat to Keep Their Chances Alive

Jurgen Klopp has plenty of experience in the latter stages of the Champions League. He knows just how tough it will be to beat Barcelona at the Camp Nou and so will head into the match with the aim of keeping the tie as close as possible for the return leg at Anfield.

In that regard, an away goal would be a huge plus for Liverpool and you have to think they have every chance of scoring one. As good as Barcelona are at keeping possession and as organised as they are in defence, Liverpool’s excellence in attacking positions means they can score in the blink of an eye.

If you agree that Liverpool will make this interesting by scoring at the Camp Nou, make sure to have a bet on both teams to score at 8/13 with Bethard.

Suarez to Punish His Former Employers

At times this season it’s looked as though Lionel Messi has been on a one-man mission to drag Barcelona to another Champions League success. The Barca captain is certainly desperate to get his hands on the trophy once more having seen Real Madrid dominate the competition in the last five years.

Messi is by no means alone in providing a huge threat to opposition defenders. Luis Suarez has bounced back from a poor spell in the middle of the season during which some pundits wrote him off as too old.

The Uruguayan is still held in very high regard by the Liverpool fans, but he will be in no mood to do them any favours on Wednesday night and can score anytime at 5/4 with Unibet.
