England v Australia ICC World Cup Semi Final Betting Preview 11/07/2019

Australia knew that they were facing a derby match in the Cricket World Cup semi-final whatever happened in their final group stage match. Win against South Africa, and they’d top the group to set up a match with New Zealand. Lose and they’d face England.

As it turned out, South Africa won the last group stage match of the tournament by 10 runs at Old Trafford. That leaves Australia facing a daunting match against the World Cup hosts who have rediscovered their mojo in recent weeks.

England to Turn the Tables

Despite going into the match as the underdogs with the online bookmakers, the Australian players will be feeling confident about their chances at Edgbaston. They got the better of England in their group stage meeting and in a warm up match before the tournament began whilst some of their key men are in excellent form.

Both David Warner (638 runs) and Aaron Finch (507 runs) are in the top four batsmen for the World Cup and Mitchell Starc has taken 26 wickets, six more than his nearest competitor in the top bowler stakes.

The other danger for England is that Australia have approached each match with a well-thought-out plan of attack for the opposition. They sprang a number of traps expertly against England a couple of weeks ago and will know exactly what they’re doing at Edgbaston.

The question is, will England’s recent improvement be enough to see them successfully navigate the challenges ahead of them?

The middle part of the group stage was characterised by some surprisingly timid performances from England. They’re at their best when puffing out their chests and with the batsmen taking the game to the opposition bowlers.

That sort of aggression was difficult at Lord’s where Australia’s pace bowlers were particularly adept at making the most of the conditions. They’ll find it tougher to do that at Edgbaston which could just hand England the advantage they need.

Still, you’d be hard-pressed to argue that England offer value in the betting at odds on. Instead, on a pitch which should favour the batting side, they have a bet on a century being scored at 4/6 with bet365.

Roy and Bairstow to Fire Again

It is no coincidence that England’s performances picked up after Jason Roy returned to the team. His performances opening the batting have the Surrey man in line for a call-up to the Ashes squad but for now he’s only interested in maintaining his excellent opening partnership with Jonny Bairstow.

The pair clearly love opening the batting together and bring the best out of one another. They should be able to give England a solid platform to build on with a strong start so back the hosts to have the highest 15 over total at 4/5 with Betway.

England’s middle order hasn’t always fired with the same sort of quality as their openers in the World Cup so far. Ben Stokes is arguably the only middle order batsman in good form, something Australia are very aware of.

Nathan Lyon will be key if Australia are to pin England down in the middle of the innings. The pitches used at Edgbaston so far in the World Cup have produced plenty of spin and Lyon can take advantage of that to be Australia’s top bowler at 4/1 with William Hill.
