Manchester City v Manchester United Betting Preview 07/12/2019

A rare midweek round of Premier League fixtures was just what both Manchester clubs needed ahead of Saturday evening’s derby.

After struggling to play their best football this season, Manchester City finally displayed the sort of cutting edge that used to be their trademark on Tuesday night with a thoroughly convincing 4-1 win over Burnley at Turf Moor.

Manchester United were a little less convincing one day later but the 2-1 win over Tottenham at Old Trafford was incredibly welcome for Ole Gunnar Solskajer and his players.

Turning one win into an extended run of form has been the real challenge for both teams and it certainly won’t be easy for either side to win again when they meet at the Etihad.

City to Make the Most of Their Home Advantage

The Manchester derby is perhaps the starkest reminder for Man Utd fans of how the balance of footballing power has changed in the city. Whilst there was nothing United could do about the influx of money that came the way of their rivals, their own recent problems are the club’s own doing.

There’s a distinct lack of strategy either on or off the pitch at Man Utd which has seen them trail in Man City’s wake. Even with City failing to hit their stride, Pep Guardiola’s men are 11 points clear of United in the Premier League table, a gap we expect to grow come Saturday evening.

It would take a remarkable run of wins and an equally remarkable collapse from Liverpool for Man City to win the Premier League for the third year in a row. It’s far too early for them to give up hope though and following on from an impressive performance away to Burnley, Man City should be able to secure a morale boosting win in the derby.

The bookies have City as the clearest of favourites at a general 1/3. We think it’s worth taking a bit more of a risk to win bigger by betting on Man City with a -1 goal handicap applied at 17/20 with Coral.

Jesus Starting to Live Up to the Billing

In the early stages of Pep Guardiola’s time at Manchester City there were persistent rumours that he was not the biggest fan of Sergio Aguero. The suggestion was that Aguero does not work hard enough to live up to the expectations that Guardiola has of a centre forward and it appeared only a matter of time before Gabriel Jesus became the team’s number one striker.

That it has not panned out that way is to Aguero’s credit. It’s also because Jesus has yet to really take the Premier League by storm as many believed he would. It’s easy to forget that Jesus is still only 22 and has many years to go before he hits his peak.

Jesus has had to remain patient and try to take his opportunities when they come. The recent injury to Aguero is one such opportunity. He stepped up to the plate in impressive style with two goals to cap an excellent performance against Burnley and can keep his form going by scoring the first goal of the derby at odds of 18/5 with 888Sport.
