Manchester United v Manchester City Betting Preview 08/03/2020

The Manchester derby is always a massive occasion but there is an extra level of anticipation ahead of Sunday’s match. That’s because both Manchester United and Manchester City head into the game feeling good about themselves.

The positivity at Man Utd stems from their recent form. They’ve come through four tough matches – against Wolves, Chelsea, Watford and Everton – without losing, qualified for the Round of 16 of the Europa League and beat Derby 3-0 in the FA Cup on Thursday night.

Man City’s positivity, despite being out of the Premier League title race, stems from their win over Real Madrid in the Santiago Bernabeu and getting their hands on the EFL Cup last weekend.

The fact that this is the fourth meeting of these two rivals this season only adds to the excitement. United are 2-1 up in matches but it’s City who are the odds on favourites with the bookies. Which way, then, will this one go?

City Look Too Short for Support

The most interesting thing about this season’s meetings between the two Manchester rivals is that it’s the away team who have come out on top on all three occasions.

Man Utd enjoyed the chance to play on the counter on their two trips to the Etihad whilst Man City were comfortable dominating possession and blitzing the United defence in the first half of their trip to Old Trafford.

Both teams have played a lot of football lately but they’ll each be focusing on starting as fast as they can as the team who scored first in those three matches went on to win. We’re expecting a fast start so a bet on over 1.5 first half goals may well pay out nicely at a best price of 8/5 with SportNation.

Whoever starts the fastest, there is every chance that this match will buck the trend in that the team who score first don’t go on to win. That’s because there is a good chance of a draw, certainly better than the odds of 17/5 that Unibet are quoting.

There is no doubt that Man City are the stronger side but Pep Guardiola will have to shuffle the pack on Sunday to keep his best players fit with so many more important matches ahead in the coming weeks.

The points also mean more to Man Utd as they still have to qualify for the Champions League whereas City are all but assured of a second place finish whatever happens. We’re hoping for fireworks as both teams push for the win but ultimately believe they’ll both settle for a point in the final reckoning.

Aguero Chasing Another Record

When Sergio Aguero was substituted during Manchester City’s win over Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup on Wednesday night it looked as though he was involved in a heated discussion with Pep Guardiola.

It turned out that Guardiola was just advising Aguero about his movement. That interaction told you a lot about why the two men have had such tremendous success. Their obsession with improvement drives them forwards and Aguero has certainly improved his all round game since Guardiola turned up in Manchester.

Aguero has broken many records during his time in English football and is chasing another one on Sunday when he can become the leading scorer in the history of the Manchester derby.

The Argentine said that after the Wednesday game that the injury that forced him to be substituted was nothing serious and he should start at Old Trafford where he is well priced to score the game’s first goal at 10/3 with Boylesports.
