Chelsea v Tottenham Hotspur Betting Preview 22/02/2020
The London derby between Chelsea and Tottenham is always a big match for both teams. For many years, Chelsea’s challenge against Spurs was spearheaded on the pitch by Frank Lampard and on the touchline by Jose Mourinho but they’ll meet as rivals in opposite dugouts on Saturday afternoon.
This is the third time that the two have met as equals. On each previous occasion it’s the younger man who has come out on top.
Lampard guided Derby County to a cup victory via a penalty shoot-out last season before his Chelsea team put in arguably their best performance of the season in the Premier League to beat Tottenham.
The Blues badly need a repeat of that sort of performance. They are winless in their last four league matches. Another defeat on Saturday would see Chelsea relinquish their top four spot to their fierce rivals.
Attack May Prove to be the Best Form of Defence
Tottenham haven’t really set the world alight since Jose Mourinho took over from Mauricio Pochettino. Performances are secondary to results when you’re pushing for the top four though and Spurs have won their last three league matches.
Usually, that would inspire confidence in a team but much of that confidence has evaporated over the last couple of days. First, Son Heung-min joined Harry Kane on the long term injury list for Spurs and then came a troubling performance against RB Leipzig in the Champions League.
Tottenham were simply outplayed in the first half of Tuesday’s match. They recovered with a change of shape and emphasis later on in the match but only at the expense of Mourinho upsetting Dele Alli by substituting him.
Mourinho didn’t hold back regarding Alli in his post-match media duties and it will be very interesting to see if the England midfield starts at Stamford Bridge or if Spurs start the game with the same team and formation that ended the Leipzig match.
There is certainly value in playing an attacking line up against a Chelsea defence which has really struggled at times this season. Yes, Tottenham are without their best two forwards but the likes of Lucas Moura and Steven Bergwijn are capable of leading the line and putting ample pressure on the Chelsea defence.
On the flip side, Tottenham have also had their defensive problems since Mourinho turned up which Chelsea will believe they can exploit. As important as this game is, both teams should see it as a chance to win if they take the game to their rivals. We’re expecting goals so like the look of the odds of 4/5 that Betfred are quoting on over 2.5 goals.
Expect Late Drama
Whatever approach Lampard and Mourinho take, neither manager will give up on the game. They each have quality players to call upon on the bench and have shown they can change things up from a tactical perspective.
Therefore, it makes sense to expect a flurry of action later on in the match. To capitalise on this with your weekend football betting, take the 21/20 that Betway are quoting on more goals being scored in the second half than the first.
Every Chelsea player would love to make themselves a hero on Saturday by grabbing the all important winner against Tottenham. As a former Arsenal player, it would arguably mean most to Olivier Giroud though.
The Frenchman was given a mixed reception when he was substituted on against Manchester United but will take heart from the fact that he was used at all by Lampard. Whatever has gone on behind the scenes, Giroud remains a high quality striker who looks a good bet to score the game’s last goal at 24/5 with 888Sport.
