Manchester City v Liverpool Community Shield 2019 Betting Preview
The Community Shield traditionally sees the winners of the Premier League and the FA Cup go up against each other in a largely ceremonial game. It’s a little different in 2019 as Manchester City completed the domestic treble last season and so will face Liverpool, the team they pipped to the title, at Wembley Stadium.
These two teams have served up some thrilling matches under the management of Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp respectively. The Community Shield has thrown up some entertaining matches over the last 10 years or so and we’re looking forward to another one on Sunday afternoon.
More Wembley Triumph in Store for City
Manchester City don’t actually have a great record in the Community Shield. This will be their 12th appearance, and they’ve so far won just five times. It has to be said that this is the best City side ever to contest this match though.
Pep Guardiola’s expensively assembled team has a very good record at Wembley including wins in both the FA Cup and EFL finals last season. They are the odds-on favourites to improve that record on Sunday, and we think that’s an accurate reading of the match.
Yes, Liverpool were excellent last season to keep the title race alive until the final day and utilising their attacking brilliance to win the Champions League. However, they’ve not got anywhere near to the levels we know they’re capable of so far in pre-season.
Despite Jurgen Klopp saying that pre-season results have no bearing on what is to come over the next nine months, some Liverpool fans are worried about the nature of the Reds’ defending in particular.
Man City should be able to exploit any weaknesses or rustiness in the Liverpool back line. They are one of the most fearsome attacking sides in the world and we think they will win the Community Shield inside 90 minutes at 10/11 with RedZone.
Guardiola’s Men Can Get Off to a Fast Start
This is way down the list of the priorities for both Man City and Liverpool. Guardiola and his team will, however, see it as an important chance to set their stall out for the campaign ahead.
The Citizens want to break Liverpool’s resistance as early as possible in the title race and can land a blow before the season even begins at Wembley. A nice comfortable win for Man City would do wonders for their confidence and make things even more uncomfortable for those Liverpool fans who are already getting twitchy.
For those looking to profit from a fast start from Man City, we like the look of the 9/1 that Coral are quoting on the Premier League champions scoring over two or more goals in the first half.
Sane to Justify His Price Tag
Man City have been involved in some of the biggest transfer deals of the last five years. They’ve splashed the cash once again this summer, but it’s an outgoing transfer saga that is currently concerning the City fans.
Leroy Sane has been linked with a move back to Germany with Bayern Munich throughout the summer. The two clubs have been in official contact over a deal but City are holding firm, quoting a huge transfer fee of around £140 million for the flying winger.
Sane is no clearer as to where he will be playing over the course of the season but for now there is little he can do except get his head down and work. A good performance on Sunday would do his hopes of a move or of nailing down a place in the Man City team the power of good so consider backing Sane to score at 13/5 with Paddy Power.
