Manchester City v Watford FA Cup Final Betting Preview 18/05/2019
Pep Guardiola could not hide his delight when Riyad Mahrez scored Manchester City’s third goal against Brighton on Sunday. He knew that the two goal cushion that gave his team was surely enough to secure the Premier League title in their final match of the campaign and things only got better when Ilkay Gundogan made it 4-1 with an excellent free kick.
City were pushed all the way by Liverpool but in the end proved that they really are the best team in England. They can hammer that home by becoming the first team to complete a domestic treble when they take on Watford in the FA Cup final on Saturday.
Watford limped over the line in the Premier League with a disappointing run of three straight defeats. It looked very clear that the players all had half a mind on the FA Cup final during the losses against Wolves, Chelsea and West Ham and the Hornets should be much more like their old selves upon their return to Wembley Stadium.
Watford to Make Things Interesting
The biggest odds you can get on Man City winning Saturday’s match inside 90 minutes is the 2/9 that Ladbrokes are quoting. The newly minted Premier League champions are even shorter in the betting to lift the trophy which is understandable if a little disappointing for punters.
The bookmakers clearly don’t believe that Man City will suffer any sort of hangover from the celebrations that followed winning the title, and it’s tough to disagree. Watford played some excellent stuff at times this season but their record against the Premier League’s top six was horrible and includes two losses to Man City with an aggregate score of 5-2.
Javi Gracia’s men did manage to score in both their encounters with the Citizens though, and we think they’ll be able to do so again. Watford will be ready to pounce on the slightest bit of complacency or drop off from the champions and should start the match strongly.
Ultimately, Man City’s extra quality is sure to tell, but rather than simply backing the favourites at heavy odds on, consider the 2/1 that Betway are quoting on Man City winning the match and both teams scoring.
Deulofeu to Relish the Wembley Stage
Watford earned their place in the FA Cup final the hard way. The Hornets looked down and out when 2-0 down after an hour in their semi-final against Wolves but showed an impressive fighting spirit to claw their way back into the match before winning it in extra time.
The introduction of Gerard Deulofeu off the bench was widely credited with changing the game for Watford. The Spaniard is a certainty to start the final, and you can be sure he’ll do everything in his power to make the headlines again.
Deulofeu had only moderate success with Barcelona and Everton but is very much rebuilding his reputation with Watford. With eyes on playing at an ever higher level in the future, the tricky winger can show what he’s capable of in front of a huge TV audience by scoring in the FA Cup final at 6/1 with RedZone.
It’s tougher to predict who will score the goals that Man City need as they have so many top class attacking players. At the odds though, a bet on Kevin De Bruyne scoring City’s first goal looks tempting at 13/2 with bet365.
The Belgian has had a frustrating season with injuries but should be given the chance to put that to bed by starting in the final where his long range shooting will cause Watford problems.
