Thurles Horse Racing Betting Preview 21/03/2020
Thurles has a proud history of hosting jumps racing. The first recorded meeting at the Irish track took place back in 1732 but Thurles rarely hosts the biggest racing meeting of a weekend.
That’s the case this week though as the ITV Racing cameras are set to broadcast five live races from the eight-race card.
This is a huge deal for everybody at Thurles and although there won’t be any fans heading to Tipperary for the meeting due to the strict conditions under which horse racing continues in Ireland, it promises to be a special afternoon for everybody involved with the family owned track.
The feature race of the day is the Pierce Molony Memorial Novice Chase which is named after the man who used to own Thurles. There are other interesting and quality races on the card so we’ve picked out the best betting value available.
A Worthy Favourite of the Day’s Big Race
The Pierce Molony Memorial Novice Chase is the big race of the day at Thurles and there’s a fitting field assembled for this Grade 3mcontest. The nine runners confirmed to make the trip to Tipperary are headed in the betting by Sizing Pottsie who is fresh off a first Graded success over fences at Navan last time out.
Jessica Harrington has long since believed that this big, imposing six-year-old has the makings of a quality chaser and he is starting to repay the faith shown in him by connections who forked out a big fee to buy him as a three-year-old.
After unseating his rider in his first attempt over the bigger obstacles, Sizing Pottsie made light work of the field in a Beginners Chase at Fairyhouse but it was his performance in Navan that really made people sit up and take notice.
He came on strongly when Robbie Power shook him up after they turned for home and he finished strongly for a good win. If his jumping is as good on Saturday, Sizing Pottsie will be tough to beat at 5/2 with Paddy Power.
The bookies have Zero Ten as the favourite’s main rival in the betting and he is another potentially smart horse but those looking for each way value should instead consider Cut The Mustard at 8/1 with Ladbrokes.
She finished second to Sizing Pottsie at Navan and can make the most of her mares’ allowance to finish the best of the rest in Saturday’s feature.
Best Bets from the Rest of the Action
The Thurles’ card begins with the 1:40 which is a maiden hurdle featuring a couple of horses who have been tipped to go on to bigger things. Joseph O’Brien’s entry, Arthurian Fame, showed an instant like for hurdles when finishing second on his debut at Cork and he is the favourite for the Adare Manor Opportunity Maiden Hurdle.
However, Arthurian Fame hasn’t shown anything like that form in two subsequent starts so may well end up a beaten horse again with Fakiera poised to break his duck over hurdles. He’s finished second on his two most recent outings in which he faced a combined 43 rivals so won’t mind the 16-runner field at Thurles where he can utilise his stamina to win at 2/1 with bet365.
Our final tip from Thurles is Western Sea in the last live ITV race at 3:40. There’s another big field here as trainers grab the chance to get their horses a run and with 16 in the field for this 2 mile 4½ furlong handicap, there’s a real chance for outsiders to earn a good result.
Western Sea hasn’t been completely missed by the market at 8/1 with William Hill but Ross O’Sullivan’s seven-year-old has run better than recent results suggest so he does stand out at that price.
Betting Tips
Fakiera to win the 1:40 at 2/1 with bet365
Sizing Pottsie to win the 3:10 at 5/2 with Paddy Power
Cut The Mustard each way in the 3:10 at 8/1 with Ladbrokes
Western Sea to win the 3:40 at 8/1 with William Hill
