Tottenham Hotspur v Ajax Champions League Betting Preview 30/04/2019
You would have made a tidy profit from the bookmakers if you’d bet on Tottenham and Ajax both making the final four of the Champions League at the start of the season. Fans around Europe knew that both teams had genuine quality but almost nobody believed they had what it took to plot a path through to the semi-finals.
Both teams have had to ride their luck at times but, to be fair, that is the case for every team who has ever made the Champions League semi-final. Indeed, the bravery with which Tottenham and Ajax have tackled the huge European nights over the last couple of months is more than enough to suggest they fully deserve to be one tie away from the final in Madrid.
Ajax to Rise to the Challenge Once Again
In a Champions League campaign full of entertainment, enthralling storylines and huge upsets, Ajax have been the story of the season. The Eredivise side have plenty of European pedigree, but it’s been over 40 years since they last made it this far in the competition.
As ever, the bulk of this impressive Ajax team is made up of players who came through the club’s youth system and whilst Frenkie de Jong and Matthijs di Ligt are set to leave the club in the summer, the togetherness of this team cannot be questioned.
Ajax tore Real Madrid and Juventus to pieces at times in the round of 16 and quarter-finals and will have no problem taking an attacking approach against Spurs.
Tottenham were rather more reserved in their home legs against Dortmund and Man City. In both matches they weathered early storms before taking their chances in the second half, and it would be no surprise if they come out on Tuesday with the aim of quelling Ajax’s early ambition.
It is very difficult to keep Erik ten Hag’s team quiet for the whole match though whilst Tottenham have plenty of high class attacking players even without the stricken Harry Kane. Therefore, a bet on the second half having more goals than the first looks a wise option at odds of 21/20 with Betfred.
Spurs Won’t Turn Their Noses Up at a Draw
Tottenham are the favourites to win Tuesday night’s match, but it’s a lot closer in the bookmakers’ To Qualify markets. Odds comparisons show that some books are finding it impossible to separate these two teams, and we don’t believe that will change much after the first leg.
Spurs would obviously love to kill this tie off in the first leg by making the most of their impressive record at their new stadium. Mauricio Pochettino has shown a real understanding of how these two-legged ties work this season though and will fancy his team to score at least once in Amsterdam.
The Tottenham manager will likely believe that a low scoring draw is actually a good result for his team. Certainly he won’t risk their participation in the final by going hell for leather for the win which makes a bet on the 1-1 correct score tempting at 6/1 with Sportingbet.
If Ajax are to score at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium it would be no surprise if it came via Dusan Tadic. The former Southampton winger has been in wonderful form for Ajax this season and is well priced to score anytime at 47/20 with 888Sport.
